Tower Block of Commons: You ask the MPs.
Submit questions by Feb 23 2010
Interview published on Feb 23 2010
Introduction
The jury is still out on whether Channel 4's brilliant series enhanced the reputation of MPs or further proved how out of touch they can be with the problems some people face in every day life. Yoosk decided to push for a bit more evidence by gathering questions for three of the MPs - some came from C4 viewers, some from Yoosk users and some directly from residents of Newtown Birmingham, where part of Tower Block of Commons was filmed. The questions were put to Mark Oaten and Tim Loughton by the very impressive Natina James, the single mum and dance teacher who Tim stayed with in the first episode. Austin Mitchell gave his answers to Keith Halstead, co-founder of Yoosk. So what's the final verdict on the MPs? We'll leave you to decide for yourselves. Please vote and comment on whether you think they give good answers and share the videos with friends..

"Hello Tim, during the process of the program some people stated that they don't vote at all, Therefore i shall be raising questions pertaining to the topic of voting, please could you answer the following directly, honestly and truthfully with a yes or no answer? thank you. It is my understanding the House of Commons is the second highest court of this realm; do you agree? Also it is my understanding that in Law, silence is in fact consent, which is legally termed Acquiescence, meaning; the act or condition of acquiescing or giving tacit assent; agreement or consent by silence or without objection, do you agree? Furthermore if someone is registered on the electoral roll, but that someone decides against voting, is it then the case that, having stayed silent they have in fact consented to the present government, meaning the party in power receives that someone's vote by default? "Dear Mark
The LibDems have said many times that they will show fairness to pensioners. Of the one million British state pensioners who are living abroad in retirement, 500,000 have their pensions indexed as promised, BUT the other 500,000 have their pensions frozen.
Will the LibDems press parliament to make sure that ALL British state pensioners receive the indexed pension they paid for when they and their employers contributed regular payments to the National Insurance Fund? Surely where they live in retirement is totally irrelevant!"

"Perhaps naively, I have recently joined the Liberal Democrats, believing that in a highly schizophrenic political culture that the Lib Dem's are a voice of reason. However, what can you offer to assure the vast majority of eloquent, politically interested-if-not-active working class people like me that you will actually make the effort to ensure that your MP's are notof the usual middle-class - university - parents pay for unpaid internship - PR company - media guru - MP - media guru? Like most working class people I do not want my MP's to be celebrities. Like most working class people I find the fact that it takes a CH 4 documentary for MP's to even begin to understand life in tower blocks as highly worrying, and highly irregular considering the representative nature of an MP's role. While Mark Oaten is clearly coming across 'better' than the others in this series, I wonder why these MPs have not tried to even attempt to understand the culture they are daily supposed to scrutinise legisaltion towards before Ch 4 approached them. Perhaps I am just idealistic - but I understood that an Mp's job was to scrutinise legislation. That requires knowledge and understanding - neither of which are entirely reflected by the MP's in their short week in a tower block..."
