  1. Londontowner asked David Hill: "Morale is pretty low in the council right now- how will you make sure it doesn't get worse against a backdrop of cuts?"

Show more»" At the end of last year we participated in the Sunday Times Best Companies Workforce Survey. We've just received initial results and they do not show any significant problem of staff morale. What we actually face, as an organisation, is a time of challenge that will require us all to find new ways of doing things - so I see it as an interesting and stimulating time to work in local government.

So far, despite reductions in some funding streams we have not had to make any significant cuts in services. Indeed, by achieving efficiency savings of over £10m for 2010/11 we have been able to invest nearly £6m in new or expanded services. "Show less«

  1. HenryWillis asked David Hill: "Dear Mr Hill, if I remember MK got a bad audit a while ago, which means that we aren't getting value for money. Will this situation help matters- the cuts I read about, I mean?"

David Hill answer: "Although Milton Keynes Council got a weak external audit assessment in 2008/09, the Audit Commission's latest 'organisational assessment' of Milton Keynes Council (in December 2009) showed real improvement..." Show more»" Although Milton Keynes Council got a weak external audit assessment in 2008/09, the Audit Commission's latest 'organisational assessment' of Milton Keynes Council (in December 2009) showed real improvement - we've moved up a whole category. And we're determined to continue that improvement.

As regards 'value for money', local residents told us in 'Place Surveys' (surveys that all local councils undertake) carried out in 2008 and 2009 that Milton Keynes Council provides good value for money. We got the 9th highest score among the 51 unitary authorities in the country. "Show less«

  2. David Hill answer: "Not directly, but this external funding will help us achieve a wide range of objectives (eg promoting sustainable transport) at less cost to the council tax payer."

  1. Londontowner asked Ian Trenholm: "Hi Ian. Local people are being asked their opinion on what to spend £500,000 on- if this is successful will even bigger expenditure be assigned to participatory budgeting next year?"

We have announced our plans for Participatory Budgeting for this year which gives residents a chance to comment on some capital expenditure, and also allows us to gauge reaction. We will learn lessons from this year’s exercise and aim to expand it next year.

We have debated long and hard how best to carry out the exercise. Local government finances are complex and there are a number of things which we have to do that don’t have a high public profile but are nonetheless essential.

These include such things such as safeguarding people from abuse, carrying out regulatory functions, etc. It was important to us to ensure that the exercise we carry out gives people the opportunity to make informed choices that don’t set off one group or geographic area against another. We hope this year gives people some sensible choices that they feel they can make informed contributions and would really welcome feedback on how we can improve this to broaden participation in future years.
    Thank you

However, what can you offer to assure the vast majority of eloquent, politically interested-if-not-active working class people like me that you will actually make the effort to ensure that your MP's are notof the usual middle-class - university - parents pay for unpaid internship - PR company - media guru - MP - media guru? Like most working class people I do not want my MP's to be celebrities. Like most working class people I find the fact that it takes a CH 4 documentary for MP's to even begin to understand life in tower blocks as highly worrying, and highly irregular considering the representative nature of an MP's role. While Mark Oaten is clearly coming across 'better' than the others in this series, I wonder why these MPs have not tried to even attempt to understand the culture they are daily supposed to scrutinise legisaltion towards before Ch 4 approached them. Perhaps I am just idealistic - but I understood that an Mp's job was to scrutinise legislation. That requires knowledge and understanding - neither of which are entirely reflected by the MP's in their short week in a tower block..." Show less »
